Small project updates - July

I've been doing a bunch of smaller projects this month including work for a VR game called "Antibody" by 2D Array. This round of designs below is the first solid step taken for the antagonizing nano cancer that the player must fight.

Check out the current WIP version here and here.

I am also finishing up the last 2 ships for the initial shipping version of Scrap Station Sigma which just cleared Greenlight on Steam! This ship was designed as multiple pods that would break off and regrow throughout the lifetime of the ship.

Crunch test 1, 2, 3...

This June has probably been the fullest month of my life, and while I unfortunately can't show anything I am working on now, one day im sure at least some of it will trickle down into the public. I just wanted to leave this post down as a acknowledgement of my inactivity and a shrine of thanks and admiration to my wife for putting up with these long nights and short mornings.

Alley sketch

Forgot to post this a month ago but spent an hour or so hammering out this bladerunner-esque alley scene. I need to do this more often.

Star Fighter Inc.

With just a few days left before the Kickstarter ends I wanted to post about the really awesome project I've been lucky enough to be on! StarFighter Inc is a game concept that is very close to my heart - It holds realism, attention to detail and mindful action higher than most games out there and really dives deep into a space* that few if any games have gone before. It's been getting great press and as we turn into the final stretch the team is working in overdrive juggling interviews and social interaction in a truly inspiring way! If the idea of a hardcore space sim appeals to you you should check us out!

Other than that I've been in a bit of a lull for work I can show, but here are a few recent sketches!

A 30 minute sketch for "Shadow + Castle"

Here is a quick thumb of a small ship for an upcoming Oculus VR game.

These icons are for Scrap Station Sigma and represent upgrades you can plug into your shuttle craft to aid your team in raiding enemy ships.

Mad Max + A few quick sketches

Just got back from Mad Max and felt like it was my job to spread the word to the very few people on my wavelength who are still on the fence. It's been a weird movie that I locked onto eary, got hyped up on and was never let down by. In many ways it is my perfect action movie and propels the industry forward in directions I hope to see the results of in years to come.

In a few days I will be posting work I have been doing for "Starfighter Inc." which is currently on Kickstarter but until then here are some warmup doodles done over the past few days.

Scrap Station Sigma - "Medic"

I think I finally got back into the swing of this race on this ship... meaning I needed to go back to the Mothership and apply a few more coats of paint before truly calling it done.

And the modified Mothership from last post...

Slow Progress

It has been over a week since I've been able to show anything - Hopefully Ill be able to bring frequency back into the twice a week range. Until then here are a few 30 minute sketches and a new ship for Scrap Station Sigma.

This race is pretty basic but hopefully I will be able to jazz it up a bit before the assets get finalized.

These were done with prompts from Concept Art Sessions

Anathem - Mathic EVA Suit - WIP3 + 30 Minute Sketch

More progress on the space suit from Anathem. I've added in the details, simplified some previously magical geometry around the collar and have added lots of hand holds and railings in what I feel are practical places. I strongly feel that In space you can never have too many things to grab onto!

The right version is my first pass at the protective outer garment they put on for protection against micro meteorites (while hidden behind the "cold black mirror"). The book doesn't go into details on how these bulky suits would don these coveralls so I had to assume that the garment was put on in pieces and added bright orange strips marking important locations for context. I also added in a network of small electromagnets on the frame that when turned on would draw metal disks embedded in the kevlar to the hardsuit.

Ultimately the suit itself is bulky so an outer layer over top begins to approach comical but I think it is a very important aspect of the design so it will likely be included on the final sheet.

I am feeling better about the arm and leg joints now and decided to fuse the ankles since the feet are all but useless in the book and context. Unless something else comes up the only other functional aspect im not happy with are the fuel and waste cells currently stored in the FannyPack X5000 but I may just let it go and head into the revised back view and then final renders.

This 30 minute sketch was inspired with the prompts of Cargo and Commuting. Im really interested in semi trailers and their transition to be self driving and battery powered so had fun playing around with very utilitarian shapes and language.

Scrap Station Sigma - Final Shuttles

Finished up the final flooring tiles used for both of these races and did a bit more noodling on their abstract organic hulls. I'm really having fun creating these 4 unique races and now - with these foundations laid - can press on to the other ships in the set!

While final there still may be tweaks made to the floor color based on outstanding character assets!

Assorted 30 minute sketches

Here are some of the better received 30 minute sketches from the past week or so. These were all done as part of Concept Art Sessions.

"Rails" + "Armor" 30 minutes with 15 more noodling around.

"Wooden" + "Tower" 30 Minutes

"Engravings" + "Village" 30 minutes with 15 more color correcting and noodling.
